Project Overview

The Underpass and Flyover Bridge project aims to enhance traffic flow and connectivity by constructing an underpass, flyover bridges, and associated utilities and road works. The project is planned and scheduled using Primavera P6.

Key Components and Detailed Activities

1. Pre-Construction Activities:
   • Contract Award: This initial phase involves finalizing contracts with all stakeholders, including contractors, suppliers, and subcontractors. The contract award sets the foundation for project execution.
   • Enabling Work: This includes preparatory activities such as site clearance, grading, and setting up temporary facilities. Enabling works ensure the site is ready for the main construction activities.
   • Traffic Management Plan: A comprehensive plan is developed to manage traffic during construction. This includes setting up detours, traffic signs, and barriers to ensure safety and minimize disruptions.
   • Submittals and Approvals: This involves preparing and submitting necessary documents for engineering designs, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) plans, health, safety, and environment (HSE) plans, and mobilization plans. Obtaining approvals from relevant authorities is critical to proceed with construction.
2. Engineering and Design:
   • Surveying and Geotechnical Reports: Conducting detailed site surveys and preparing geotechnical reports to understand the site conditions and design requirements. This includes soil testing, topographical surveys, and environmental assessments.
   • Design Package: Creating comprehensive design documents for all structures and utilities. This package includes architectural drawings, structural designs, and detailed engineering plans.
   • Prequalifications and Supplier Engagement: Prequalifying contractors and suppliers based on their capabilities, experience, and past performance. This ensures that only competent parties are engaged for the project.
3. Procurement:
   • Material Procurement: Procuring all necessary materials required for civil, electrical, and mechanical works. This includes concrete, steel, electrical cables, pipes, and other construction materials.
   • Contract Signing and PO Issuance: Signing contracts with suppliers and issuing purchase orders (POs) for materials and equipment. Ensuring timely delivery of materials to the construction site is crucial.
   • Delivery on Site: Coordinating the logistics to ensure materials and equipment are delivered to the site as per the project schedule.
4. Construction Activities:
   • Mobilization: Setting up the construction site, including installing project signboards, setting up site offices, and establishing storage facilities.
   • Ground Investigation and Site Surveying: Conducting detailed ground investigations, including borehole drilling and soil analysis, to ensure foundation stability and suitability.
   • Demolishing and Site Cleaning: Removing any existing structures, clearing debris, and cleaning the site to prepare for new construction activities.
   • Traffic Diversion Work: Implementing traffic diversion plans, installing detours, and ensuring smooth traffic flow around the construction site.
5. Structures:
   • Underpass Construction:
     • Earth Excavation and Retaining Walls: Excavating the earth to the required depth and constructing retaining walls to support the underpass structure.
     • Voided Slab and Deck Slab: Constructing voided slabs to reduce weight and deck slabs to provide a smooth driving surface.
     • Expansion Joints and Water Proofing: Installing expansion joints to accommodate structural movements and applying waterproofing materials to prevent water ingress.
   • Flyover Bridge Construction:
     • Box Girder Bridge and Foundations: Constructing the main flyover bridge using box girder techniques and building strong foundations to support the structure.
     • Sub Structures and Super Structures: Building substructures like piers and abutments, and superstructures like the bridge deck.
     • MSE Walls and Ramps: Constructing mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls and ramps to provide access to the flyover.
6. Utilities:
   • Water Line Relocation: Relocating existing water lines to avoid interference with new structures. This includes installing new pipelines and connections.
   • Electrical Line Relocation: Relocating electrical lines, including 13.8 KV and 33 KV cables, to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
   • Telecommunication Lines: Protecting and relocating telecommunication lines to avoid disruptions in service.
   • Storm Drainage Lines: Installing new storm drainage lines and relocating existing ones to manage surface water and prevent flooding.
7. Road Works:
   • Main Carriageway and Service Roads: Constructing the main carriageway and service roads, including sub-grade preparation, base course laying, and asphalt paving.
   • Road Markings and Signage: Implementing road markings and installing traffic signage to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow.
   • Asphalt Works: Laying asphalt on the main carriageways, intersections, and service roads to provide a durable and smooth driving surface.
   • Landscape and Planting Works: Landscaping and planting along the roadways and medians to enhance aesthetics and provide environmental benefits.
8. Electrical and Mechanical Works:
   • Electrical Submittals and Approvals: Submitting detailed electrical work plans and obtaining necessary approvals.
   • Installation of Light Poles and Sign Boards: Installing street lighting and signboards to improve visibility and safety.
   • Mechanical Installations: Installing systems for water storm drainage, irrigation, and fire-fighting to ensure comprehensive infrastructure support.
9. Finalization and Handover:
   • Tests on Completion: Conducting rigorous testing of all structures and systems to ensure they meet design specifications and safety standards.
   • Close-Out Documentation: Preparing detailed documentation, including as-built drawings, maintenance manuals, and compliance certificates.
   • Handing Over: Officially handing over the completed project to the relevant authorities, ensuring all aspects are functional and meet the required standards.
